It was another picture perfect day on Biscayne Bay as 7 Etchells were on the line to compete for the December BBYRA hosted by MYC. We were pleased to have JAG entry 1185 from Long Island, NY join us for the day. The wind today was NE at 10-15 with a mild chop and an outgoing tide. With everyone under way after the first start 1095 with guest skipper John Rouse, Scott Piper on 1202 and 1185 battled up the middle left side of the course where there seemed to be a bit more pressure. The remainder of the fleet stayed more to the middle of the course. At the first mark it was 1202 trying to sneak in on the port layline, with 1185 and 1095 all within 3 boat lengths of the mark. 1202 forced 1185 to tack to avoid a collision at the mark an did her circles as a result. 1185 and 1095 with Sharon and Gerry on 196 were in close quarters for the rest of the race. At the finish line it was 1185 with 1095 a boat length and a half behind, followed by 1202, 196, 1100, 800 and 980.
For race two the conditions were similar with 1095 and 1202 fighting for the favored pin end at the start. 1095 got the pin, punched out and led the charge to the first mark with 1185 and 1202 in close pursuit. While approaching mark 1, 1185 who was on port tack attempted to cross 1095, but realized at the last moment that this wasn't possible. 1095 was forced to tack and 1185 did circles. After rounding the mark, 1095 and 1202 led the charge to the leeward mark with 1185 trying to gain her position back. 196 was always in the hunt and looked fast while holding on to 4th position. Again the middle to left side of the course showed more pressure and the majority of the fleet played this side of the beat. At the finish line it was 1095 with 1202 close behind, followed by 1185 and 196.
The stage was set for race 3 as 1095 had 3 points, 1185 had 4 points and 1202 had 5 points. The wind speed dropped slightly in this race and the wind over the course was not quite as consistent as the previous 2 races, although the middle seemed more favored at this point. At the windward mark it was 1185, 1202 followed by 1090, Gordon Ettie in 1100 and 196. After a tough downwind leg, everyone rounded together and chose the right gate. Everyone except 1095 who brilliantly chose the left gate sailing away from the wind and the fleet...so much for covering the fleet! As a result. 1095 arrived at the last windward mark for the day a distant 5th behind 1185, 1202, 1100 and 196.
800 and 1185 were not scored as they are not registered with BBYRA
